The Guinness World Record Breakers, 2000It has always been the aim of Mardi Gras Promotions to raise the profile of dance. To celebrate the millennium we decided to stage an event that would be certain to gain worldwide attention. In June 2000 over five thousand students from as many as two hundred performing arts schools travelled to the Birmingham NEC to break a series of UK and World Records. As the presenter of ‘Record Breakers’ for BBC1, Cheryl Baker was delighted to host the day. With her encouragement, and despite the heat of that summer, the determined performers succeeded in breaking every record they attempted including those in the categories of both Disco and Line Dancing. Most impressively we set the Guinness World Record of Largest Assembly in a Song and Dance Routine. The track used for this achievement was ‘The Best Night of Our Lives’ which is the popular finale music for all Mardi Gras shows. The event was captured for television broadcast and appeared in local and national newspapers. Each and every report proved to be overwhelmingly positive and we would like to thank all of the dance schools that helped to make that possible. |
